National Treasure Bhasamon Heavenly Statue China Tang Dynasty · 8th Century
In the Tokyo National Museum Heisei Building, the special exhibition “National Treasure Toji Temple-Kukai and Buddha Statue Manra” will be held from March 26 (Tuesday) to June 2 (Sun), 2019.
Toji Temple was created along with the Heiankyo capital move. Only Toji Temple and Nishiji Temple were allowed to build in the capital. After that, Toji is entrusted to Kukai (Kobo Daishi) who returned from Tang to study new secular Buddhism.
The Toji Temple, which became the root school of Shingon secular religion, contains many works of art related to religious religion, and has been kept until now.
In 2023, Shingonshu was opened to Rikkyo, and the 1200th anniversary will be reached. This exhibition presents the full spectrum of cultural assets from Toji Temple, including many famous treasures related to Kukai. The highest peaks of esoteric art, such as sculptures, paintings, writings, crafts, etc. meet in one hall.
