The 6th “Journey of Asia at the Museum” will be held at the Tokyo National Museum from Tuesday, September 10 to Monday, October 14, 2019.

“Museum in Asia” is the 6th annual event of the Tokyo National Museum this year.
Set in the “Toyokan” where oriental arts, crafts and archaeological artifacts gather, different themes are set up every year.

This year’s theme is “Love”.
Because love is a fundamental human emotion, its objects and forms of fellowship vary.
There must be individual answers about the relationship between love and sex and the difference between love and love.
This time, as the title of “Love Love Asia” *, we will introduce various works on the subject of love and explore how people in Asia have captured and expressed love more than ever before.

About Okyo Maruyama

Maruyama Okyo was born in 1733 (Kyoho 18) as a peasant child in the vicinity of Kameoka, Kyoto (Aita Village, Tamba Kuwana-gun).
However, life is difficult because of the poor family environment, and he was said to have been sent to the ministry from an early age.

One of the company’s customers, Owariya Kanbei, was a toy dealer that handled floats, telescopes, peep glasses, and dolls.
With the opportunity to draw eyeglasses there, Orai studied under Yui Ishida, who was cultivating the flow of the Kano school, and learned the perspective method of Western painting through eyeglasses. I refined the technique of painting.

The name will be called “Orai” from 1766 (Maywa 3).
And while meeting Yuten, the master of Mitsui-ji Enman-in Temple, and receiving various orders, he produces a number of masterpieces and continues his career as a painter.

A sketch (drawn sketch), which is created during this period and reflects the raw life.
In the era when the basics of painting at that time were only Yamato or Chinese paintings, Orai’s live-action paintings were simple and easy to understand, and would spread the paintings as familiar to the common people.

Fascinated by such a friendly and free-spirited painting style that is not bound by old traditions, there are many introductory students from all over the country, and in the 1780s, a leading school called the Maruyama school was formed and it became a school that can organize workshops I will continue.

What are Maruyama and Shijo factions?

Along with the Maruyama school, there is the “Shijo school” in the school centered on Kureharu, who studied at Yosyo-an village and later studied under special circumstances.

The Shijo school is a painting school named after , Goshun and his disciples who lived around Shijo-dori in Kyoto.
Because the artistic style of Goshun is influenced by Okyo, the two schools of Maruyama and Shijo are called “Maruyama / Shijo” as the two major schools, and the mainstream of Kyoto since the early days. It has a great influence on modern Kyoto art and has been handed down to the present day.

The highlight of the exhibition

By following the genealogy from Okyo, Goshun to modern times, this exhibition approaches the full picture of the Maruyama and Shijo factions, and reveals part of the Kyoto picture platform, which is an important part of Japanese art history. There are roughly 4 chapters.
The number of exhibitions is about 100, including 8 important cultural properties and 2 important works of art, making it the largest exhibition ever.

The most noticeable thing is the three-dimensional display of Daijoji Rie, which is called the last masterpiece of Okyo Maruyama.

“Daijoji Lacquer painting” has a breathtaking scale. The light changes the density of the ink. Please see from various angles.

One of the highlights is that only the first part of the Tokyo exhibition will have an important art piece “Eguchi Kimitzu” on display.

Maruyama Okyo’s “Eguchi Kimitzu” is one of the few beautiful Oijo pictures.
A special feature is that the renowned figure is drawn with a solid human body composition.
The way the hair falls off from the top of the hair is reproduced naturally.

Only the Tokyo exhibition is also on display for the newly discovered work, “Fish Seafood”.

“Seafood” is on the left of the photo. A total of 28 painters, who occupy most of the Maruyama and Shijo factions, draw seafood on one screen. Although it is drawn by 28 people, at first glance it is interesting that it is harmonious as if one painter is drawing.
In the center of the photo, “Matsutora” is a work depicting a representative tiger from the Kishi group that steps on the Maruyama system.

The first exhibition floor on the 1st floor of the Calligraphy Museum has two large corners.
The first is a corner called “Ancestor of Kanji” .
In this section, you can learn the history of kanji in an easy-to-understand manner from the beginning of kanji shaped by various animals from the ancestors of Chinese kanji kanji.
The other is the corner of the ancient Chinese world.

On the 2nd floor of the exhibition floor, there are legends where kanji was invented , and various divination , bronze , and corners of characters written during the Shun-Autumn War States period and the Zen period.

In addition, the 2nd floor has a special exhibition room displaying characters from the Chinese Zen period, and a Nakamura Uncertainty Memorial Room. In the Nakamura Uncertainty Commemorative Room, there is a manuscript of the era of Chinese Han Dynasty and the oldest “Sangokushi” manuscripts and characters from the time of the Three Kingdoms, as the Little Three Kingdoms Corner.

In this memorial room, there is another exhibition about Shiki Masaoka, a haiku poet who had a close relationship with Nakamura.

We talked to Nobuhiro Nakamura, Senior Researcher at the Calligraphy Museum, about the highlights of the exhibition.

What kind of place do you want your child to enjoy?

I would like you to see the raw material that shows the origin of kanji.
I think that it is of great value to actually look at the lines of kanji in the material that seems to be vital to life for 3500 years, not photos but actually.

The first thing you want to see is the character of animals.
The pattern is, “Is that figure?”, “Face?” “How, how is it?”

In addition, it is a great strength to be able to overlook the history of kanji formation in such a small museum.
This is an exhibition where parents who can bring their children can also enjoy it.

What is your favorite display item by Mr. Nakamura?

It is a historical place. In such a beautiful state, the bronzeware with which the character can be seen is rare.
As this bronze display is only for this exhibition, it is a valuable opportunity.

What is the Three Kingdoms?

The interest in space and landscapes has increased, and the landscape around them has expanded, and the paintings of Iba have shown new developments. In this exhibition, we will present pictures as a new attempt, including paintings based on photographs taken at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum.
The private exhibition by Iniwa will be held for the first time in 10 years at the art museum since 2009, “Iba Reiko-The Place of the Day-” (Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Modern Art). I am very happy to receive a request for a new solo exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, just 10 years after the solo exhibition at the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Modern Art. On this occasion, I would like to try new things, and this time I am working on new works such as paintings, prints and videos.
The title says "Gaze", but we continue to produce while trying various "How to see". As I repeated the experiment, I could meet something beyond my imagination. By dismantling and reorganizing "seeing", you may come across new perspectives in everyday life. I hope you agree with that in this exhibition.

What is the Matsukata Collection?

Kojiro Matsukata (1866-1950), the businessman who laid the foundation for the collection of the National Museum of Western Art.
Matsukata, who led the Kawasaki Shipyard (now Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd.) in Kobe, expanded a large number of works of art in London and Paris around 1916-1927, expanding business against the backdrop of ship demand from World War I. I was buying it. Collection items at that time were about 3,000 pieces from Monet, Gogan, Gogh's paintings, modern works such as Rodin's sculptures, medieval board drawings and tapestry.

"I want to make an art museum for Japanese people"

The works collected from such thoughts are the Matsukata collection.

This exhibition traces the process of formation and dissipation of the Matsukata Collection and the establishment of the National Museum of Western Art with about 160 valuable works of art and historical materials. The ten chapters from prologue to epilogue will convey to us the thoughts of Matsukata, who bet life for collection.

Highlights of the Matsukata Collection

The highlights of this exhibition are roughly divided into three.

The first one is the display of a collection of masterpieces of the former Matsukata, which has been scattered around the world, including Vincent van Gogh's Bedroom in Arles (1889).
